The first-ever AZDPS STEM Training & Application in Real World Public Safety (S.T.A.R.) program was a great success!
The three-day program was held from March 20-22, 2024, in and around AZDPS Headquarters in Phoenix and included ten student participants from high schools across Arizona.
The S.T.A.R. program was developed by the AZDPS Technical Services Division for high school students between the ages of 16 and 18 years old with the goal of providing valuable, hands-on experience and educational opportunities for professional growth in the field of public safety. By integrating principles of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the S.T.A.R. program serves as a platform to foster interest in STEM fields and show students how those principles can be applied to a career in public safety.
During the program, students observed demonstrations of traffic stops, aviation operations, an IT overview including cybersecurity, special weapons and tactics (SWAT) operations, motorcycle troopers, collision investigations, crime scene processing, metro booking presentation, and dispatchers in our communications center. They also had hands-on training with activities like fingerprinting, a practical coding workshop, crash reconstruction and mock crime scenes.
At the conclusion of the program on Friday, March 22, students received certificates of completion to recognize their participation in the program.
Thank you to all of the units who shared their time and expertise and made this program possible!
