Basic Training

The Basic Training Section (BTS) administers the Department’s State Trooper Academy (STA). Cadet State Troopers complete the 31-week STA program, which includes all Arizona Police Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) required curricula and incorporates DPS-specific training to prepare each for assignment to the Highway Patrol upon graduation. Pre-certified lateral officers join the STA during the last nine weeks of training. STA graduates complete the most challenging academy program in the state. BTS staff provide leadership and instruction in an environment of discipline and accountability to ensure each new state trooper is prepared to successfully navigate the rigors of a career in law enforcement.

Starting with STA Class 35, which began in October of 2023, training is now conducted at the DPS headquarters complex in Phoenix. The department provides a stipend and lodging for out-of-town attendees during the STA. The BTS leadership team consists of a captain and three sergeants.
