Firearm and toolmark analysis is the process of examining the characteristics of firearms or tools as well as cartridge casings, bullets, or other toolmarks left behind at a scene. Based on unique features left on cartridge casings, bullets, and toolmarks by the firearm or tool used, analysts can link or exclude firearms and tools to this crime scene evidence.
The Scientific Analysis Bureau provides this firearms and toolmark analysis at its Central and Southern laboratories. In addition, the Bureau can provide analysis in serial number restoration, shooting reconstruction, and distance determination cases.
