Update May 4, 2018: The injured Quartzsite police officer has now been identified at 34-year-old Keynan Weltha. Officer Weltha has been with QPD for three years. After undergoing some medical procedures, Officer Weltha is now recovering and is in great spirits. Additionally, he is thankful for all of the support he's received.
Today, at about 9:59 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) sergeant attempted to stop a red Jeep Cherokee SUV for a moving traffic violation along northbound SR 85 near milepost 138, west of the Phoenix metro area. The red Jeep SUV failed to stop for the sergeant and a pursuit was inititated northbound along SR 85.
The following is preliminary information and may change as the investigation unfolds.
At 7:41 p.m., two of our detectives attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle in Tucson east of South Craycroft Road and East Speedway Boulevard, for reckless driving [a criminal traffic violation] and failure to obey a traffic control device [a civil traffic violation].
Bouse Wash Rest Area, Arizona- On November 28, 2017 at around 1:50 a.m., an attempt to locate (ATL) was put out by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) dispatch regarding a shooting suspect wanted by the Phoenix Police Department. A short time later, a state trooper came across a semi-trailer whose driver claimed to have been shot at and struck by shrapnel.
Yavapai County, Arizona- At 8 a.m., an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Trooper attempted to make a traffic stop on a gold Honda passenger car for a traffic violation on southbound I-17 at milepost 244 (one mile north of Black Canyon City). The vehicle failed to yield to our trooper and a pursuit was initiated.
Today, September 19, 2017, at about 3:09 a.m. troopers began receiving calls of a body in the roadway on westbound US 60 at Val Vista. Once at the scene, troopers found the body of a male victim, in the middle lane of traffic under the Val Vista overpass, who appeared to have been struck several times by passing motorists. Westbound US 60 was closed with traffic being diverted onto SR 202. It has since reopened for traffic.
