Phoenix — A suspect in a road-rage shooting incident that occurred early Halloween morning along Interstate 17 was arrested earlier today by troopers with the Arizona Department of Public Safety (ADPS).
The male suspect, Eric J. Carreon of Phoenix, is being charged with endangerment, aggravated assault, drive-by shooting, criminal damage and possession of methamphetamine.
The incident leading to the suspect’s arrest today occurred at about 5 a.m. on Oct. 31 along Interstate 17 north of Phoenix.
A passenger car was traveling southbound along Interstate 17 in the area of Carefree Highway when a white Toyota pick-up truck attempted to pass it. The pick-up truck was unsuccessful in its attempt to pass the passenger car, and soon made a second attempt to pass it.
The pick-up truck’s second attempt to pass the passenger car was also unsuccessful. The pick-up truck then maneuvered to the right where its driver fired two rounds at the passenger car.
One bullet struck the right front wheel area of the passenger car.
Thankfully, the driver of the passenger car was not injured and was able to provide law enforcement with good information regarding the shooter and the shooter’s vehicle.
These factors, along with other evidentiary items, ultimately led to the identification and location of a suspect who was positively identified by the victim in a photo lineup.
The victim in the shooting said he is extremely grateful that the suspected shooter was found and placed into custody earlier today. He credits the troopers, detectives and crime laboratory personnel with ADPS for making the arrest of the suspect possible.
ADPS deployed a tremendous amount of its resources and worked vigorously to find and locate the suspect in this case. ADPS has zero tolerance for behavior indicative of “road rage” along the State’s highway and freeway systems and will utilize all resources to apprehend offenders.
ADPS reminds drivers to be alert and calm while traveling throughout the State and to always be patient with other motorists. Frustration with other motorists should never escalate into any form of “road rage”.
It’s important to note that Valley drivers are more vigilant than ever before in helping law enforcement when it comes to freeway incidents. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.
