Wrong-Way Injury Crash on I-17 Near Sunset Point
Four people sustained serious injuries after a head-on collision along I-17 at milepost 249.6, near Sunset Point. Two patients were flown from the scene and two others were transported by ground to Phoenix area hospitals. Four total people were involved; three occupants were traveling within the victim vehicle and the driver/sole occupant of the wrong-way vehicle. They were all transported from the scene at approximately 3:30 a.m.
DPS received the initial report of a wrong-way vehicle at 2:39 a.m. The report described a vehicle traveling northbound within the southbound traffic lanes of I-17. As troopers responded to the scene, DPS received the report of the crash at 2:50 a.m. Motorists removed four people from both vehicles involved in the head-on crash. When troopers arrived, both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames.
The southbound traffic lanes have been closed most of the morning and will be restricted intermittently through 8:00 a.m. for collision scene management. The roadway was completely opened at 6:30 a.m.
The suspect vehicle is a Pontiac sedan and the victim vehicle is a Toyota Rav4
Impairment has not been ruled out.
