Continuing Education
Arizona POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) requires all certified peace officers to complete annual training in order to maintain their certification. This training includes skills proficiency and applicable academic training. The sworn officers may receive this training in many different ways.
Defensive Tactics
This program encompasses both sworn and civilian employees. The sworn officers receive training that prepares them to respond to physical threats to citizens or themselves, which may occur during the performance of their duties. The program is responsible for evaluating all uses of force authorized by the department to include, hand-to-hand combat, impact weapons, O.C. (pepper) spray, electronic weapons (Taser®), and specialty munitions.
Driver Training
Police officers and Highway Patrol officers in particular spend a great deal of time operating vehicles in the course of their duties. In emergency situations, driving skills are extremely important. Periodic training in the safe operation of emergency vehicles is essential. The Driver Training Program Coordinator is responsible for keeping the Department's officers proficient in this area. Civilian employees who operate state vehicles are also eligible for training.
Health and Wellness
Department employees perform a variety of duties throughout the Department, some of which require high levels of physical fitness. Currently, the program uses a staff of trained fitness instructors who assess and aid employees in maintaining the optimum level of fitness for their job.
Professional Development
The Office of Professional Development was created in January, 1996 with a focus on creating career development programs for civilian employees. The unit has since expanded to include both civilian and sworn training programs.
