Wrong Way Vehicle Along I-40 Ends in a Fatality West of Flagstaff

DPS is investigating a wrong-way single vehicle collision that resulted in a fatality along eastbound I-40 at milepost 190 on August 15, at about 3:15 a.m. A Chevrolet Sport Utility Vehicle was traveling wrong-way [eastbound] within the westbound traffic lanes of I-40. The vehicle left the main traffic lanes of I-40 via the 190J on-ramp for A-1 Mountain Road. The vehicle traveled uphill through the vegetated portion of the on-ramp gore area, struck the west concrete barrier wall of A-1 Mountain Rd. which caused the vehicle to travel into the air and over the wall. The vehicle slid across A-1 Mountain Rd. and struck the guardrail along the east side of the road. The vehicle continued over the guardrail and rolled down the vegetated embankment of the westbound I-40 off-ramp and landed on all four wheels. The driver, 39 year-old Eric Samuel Weckwerth was pronounced deceased on-scene; he was a resident of Black Canyon City, Arizona. Impairment may have been a factor.

The two A-1 Mountain Road off-ramps were closed and traffic was restricted to one lane westbound from 3:07 a.m. to 6:20 a.m.
