Cross-over Collision and Subsequent Fire Claims Two Lives Along I-10 in Tucson

DPS is investigating a cross-over collision and subsequent fire involving a commercial truck tractor pulling a semitrailer and a passenger car. The collision occurred eastbound along I-10 at milepost 271, in Tucson at 3:42 a.m. The commercial vehicle was traveling within the westbound traffic lanes of I-10 when it entered the median and began to roll over. The commercial vehicle then traveled the eastbound traffic lanes where it collided with an eastbound passenger car. The passenger car burst into flames and ignited the commercial vehicle; the fire was extinguished two hours later. Both drivers were pronounced deceased on scene. The westbound traffic lanes were closed between 3:42 a.m. and 8:47 a.m. The eastbound traffic lanes were reopened at 10:40 a.m.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was identified as James A Newsum age 66
, of Indianapolis, Indiana. The driver of the passenger car was identified as Justin C Boyle age 25, of Escondido California
