East Valley — During this years Independence Day holiday, DPS warns drivers not to risk life, limb, and liability by driving distracted or stopping illegally along Arizona highways to watch fireworks displays.

It is illegal to stop or impede traffic on the highway outside of an emergency. Drivers should always be aware that it is dangerous to stop along the highway for any reason.

That is why DPS Highway Patrol officers are prepared to saturate the east valley during the scheduled fireworks display at Tempe Town Lake on July 4, in order to deter and take enforcement action against drivers who impede traffic along Red Mountain 202.

DPS focus is to prevent traffic congestion that can lead to deadly crashes.

Drivers can ensure their own safety and the safety of others by completely leaving the highway system if they choose to observe the fireworks displays.
