Eight DPS Highway Patrol officers, working in conjunction with a DPS fixed-wing aircraft and crew, conducted 138 traffic stops in a nine-hour period over President’s Day weekend along U.S. 93.

Among the 138 traffic stops, 133 were initiated and directed by the crew aboard the DPS fixed-wing aircraft.

During the traffic stops, officers issued 127 speed citations, five non-hazardous citations, and three child restraint citations. Officers also discovered 11 criminal violations.

All of the speeders stopped were traveling at least 20 mph over the 65 mph posted speed limit. Eighty-three of the speeders were traveling at least 90 mph and 13 of the speeders were traveling in excess of 100 mph. The highest average speed of one of the cited motorists was 106 mph.

The traffic enforcement operation was conducted in an effort to save lives. The Arizona Department of Public Safety is planning more of these targeted traffic enforcement operations in an effort to get motorists to pay more attention to their driving.

DPS would like to thank the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) for its support of this traffic safety program.
