ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CHARGES WRONG-WAY DRIVER WITH 2nd DEGREE MURDER IN COLLISION WITH A MOTORCYCLIST

On Aug. 26, 2012, at 3:33 p.m., Arizona Department of Public Safety officers responded to a three-vehicle fatal collision on eastbound State Route 101 at milepost 29.5. A gray Toyota sedan (vehicle #1) was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it struck a black Harley Davidson motorcycle (vehicle #2) head on and caused another motorcycle (vehicle #3) to take evasive action and crash too. Driver of vehicle #2 was transported to JCL hospital where he was pronounced dead, driver of vehicle #1 and #3 were transported for non-life-threatening injuries.
Driver and witness statements indicate that vehicle #1 was traveling northbound on S.R. 51 where she took the eastbound S.R. 101 ramp, once she got to the end of the ramp driver of vehicle #1 made a u-turn and headed westbound in the eastbound HOV lane were she continued till the collision occurred. Driver of vehicle #1 was arrested and booked into MCSO 4th Avenue Jail. Further charges may be pending upon blood sample results. Driver’s involved and Charges are as follows:
Scott Benson, 43, Tempe
Carol Ann Sacca, 59
2ND Degree Murder, 3 counts of Endangerment and 1 count of Criminal damage.
