Arizona Department of Public Safety K-9 Euthanized

Thursday, July 12, 2012 -

It is with sadness that we report that DPS K-9, Jeg, took a turn for the worse this morning. As his condition continued to deteriorate and, based upon veterinary medical advice, Jeg was euthanized today at 2:35 pm. The decision was made by Canine District commander, Capt. Jenna Mitchell. Capt. Mitchell, Officer Korey Lankow (Jeg’s handler) and other friends and family were present when Jeg was put down.

Jeg, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois, had served with Officer Lankow for nearly three years. Prior to being assigned to Officer Lankow, Jeg had worked with another DPS K-9 handler. Officer Lankow came to DPS in October 2005 following a 22-year career with the United States Air Force. After his academy training, he was assigned to the Tucson Highway Patrol district for several years before being selected for the Border Crimes Unit. He became a K-9 officer in 2009.

Officer Lankow remains on administrative leave at this time. The Tucson Police Department is conducting the criminal investigation into this incident and will consult with city and county attorneys. The DPS Special Investigations Unit is conducting an administrative investigation looking into policy and procedures, training and equipment issues.

The Department of Public Safety expresses sincere appreciation to the initial responders at DPS who provided immediate care for Jeg; to the Tucson Fire Department for going above and beyond in looking after Jeg and Officer Lankow; and to the doctors and staff of the Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center for the extraordinary care they have provided and the kindness they have shown to all those who have been so concerned about Jeg during this tragic incident.
