We would like to make it clear that these intrusions have in no way affected public safety, or the ability of the agency to conduct its mission. The department’s mission is to protect the citizens of Arizona and we will continue to do so every day in a professional manner.

On June 29, 2011, the Arizona Department of Public Safety became aware that a cyber-terrorism group—calling itself “antisec” –released personal information of DPS employees and documents. The group appears to have gained access to the personal email accounts of at least eleven DPS employees. The cyber terrorism group has posted the stolen information on its website. Law enforcement agencies are working to identify the source of the cyber-attack and have initiated a joint criminal investigation.

There is no evidence the attack has breached the servers of computer systems of DPS, nor the larger state network.

Upon learning of the intrusion into the personal accounts of DPS employees, the agency took action. In addition to contacting other law enforcement agencies, the Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center (ACTIC) has been activated. E-mail access for DPS employees remains suspended.

The security of the eleven DPS employees in question remains the agency’s top priority, since a limited amount of personal information was publicly disclosed as part of this breach. Steps are being taken to ensure the officer’s safety and that of their families.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is a state-level law enforcement agency whose mission is to protect human life and property by enforcing state laws, deterring criminal activity and providing vital support to the State of Arizona and its citizens.
