Arizona Department of Public Safety Conducts Special Enforcement Effort as part of Operation Safe Passage & Share the Road

The DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau will conduct a roving enforcement detail along Interstate 10 from the California border to Tucson. During the detail, which will take place March 29 and 30, 2011, officers will be on the lookout for commercial vehicles committing hazardous moving violations. Officers will also conduct driver-only inspections in an effort to ensure all commercial vehicle drivers are complying with the federal hours of service regulations. Over 80 officers will be participating in the detail.

A public outreach event will occur simultaneously with the enforcement effort at the Burnt Wells rest area on Interstate 10, approximately 40 miles west of Phoenix. This rest area will be the setting for a Share the Road event. This program is a partnership between the Arizona Trucking Association (ATA) and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Several times per year, ATA joins with DPS and conducts an event on a state highway while DPS provides traffic enforcement activities in support of the program. During this event, ATA personnel will be displaying their No-Zone demonstration trailer to highlight the critical area associated with vehicle operations around commercial vehicles.

The effort is aimed at crash reduction through enforcement of hazardous moving violations and all federal Commercial Motor Vehicle regulations. At the same time DPS officers will be vigilant as to other criminal activities in the area to include human smuggling, contraband smuggling, border violence and homeland security concerns.

This operation is being coordinated with the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
