Wednesday, July 28, 2010 -
Several events are planned on and around the Arizona State Capitol grounds the week of July 26th, 2010. Historically, the Arizona State Capitol Police Department in a partnership with the Arizona Department of Public Safety, have provided police services and security during major events including inaugurations, planned marches, memorials, and protest events including those conducted in the past three months.
Law enforcement for events planned this week will be managed in a similar fashion. Protestors and event organizers may believe the new laws enacted July 29th, 2010 by Senate Bill 1070 will change tactics or procedures utilized by Capitol Police or Department of Public Safety officers. In fact, the focus of law enforcement during these events will be public safety including providing a safe environment for thousands of state employees that will be present in and around the Capitol Mall, protestors, marchers, and other individuals present.
The advent of new immigration enforcement state laws will not impact general law enforcement and peace keeping during planned events at the State Capitol.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is a state-level law enforcement agency whose mission is to protect human life and property by enforcing state laws, deterring criminal activity and providing vital support to the State of Arizona and its citizens.
