Past weekend yields nearly $30,000 in cash seized by DPS officers

Two unrelated traffic stops made by DPS officers over this past weekend, which began Sept. 19, resulted in the combined seizure of $28,330 in suspected drug money. The first stop took place on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at about 12:45 a.m. when a DPS officer stopped a 2002 Mitsubishi on westbound Interstate 10 north of Tucson for a traffic violation. A narcotics canine alerted to the vehicle and during probable cause search $4,450 in U.S. currency was located and subsequently seized. The driver was released pending further investigation.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at about 10:13 a.m., a DPS officer stopped a 2009 Toyota Avalon on southbound Interstate 17, in the Cordes Junction area, for moving violations. A narcotics canine alerted to the vehicle and during probable cause search of the sedan the DPS officer located $23,880 in U.S. currency along with drug paraphernalia in the trunk of the vehicle. The driver and lone occupant, James Clark Dalton, 26, of Cody, WY., was arrested on money laundering charges. The money was seized and vehicle was returned to the rental agency.
