Emergency Medical Services Communications (EMSCOM)
Overview
Arizona's Emergency Medical Services Communications (EMSCOM) system provides a communication link between field Emergency Medical Services personnel and statewide medical facilities. This system allows two-way voice communications through a complex network of microwave antennae, mountaintop repeaters, stationary consoles, and mobile and portable radio units.
The EMSCOM radio is located in the Department of Public Safety's Phoenix Operational Communications Center. This radio is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by OPCOMM dispatchers.
EMSCOM dispatchers perform the following duties:
- Dispatch DPS Ranger Helicopters when requested.
- Contact the closest available medical helicopter for the Flagstaff and Tucson DPS Communications centers for emergency medical response.
- Provide in-flight following and welfare checks for DPS Ranger helicopters.
- Provide communication links for landing zone instructions between ground ambulances, other agencies and DPS field officers.
